The Lion King was also the first show in Broadway history to pass $1 billion in cumulative gross, a threshold also crossed by the North American tour and, most recently, the Hamburg production. And, to this day, that is the audience experience whether they see the show in Madrid Appleton, Wisconsin South Africa Tokyo or Broadway. Thomas Schumacher, president and producer at Disney Theatrical Productions, told AP, "It's difficult not to become emotional at this realization of the show's impact.… Our goal…was to tell the story purely and theatrically so that audiences could feel it in their heart. In film the title is held by "Avatar," which grossed $2.8 billion worldwide. Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera previously held the record, with a worldwide gross of $6 billion.
